Mark Franz – “Two Women”

This painting by Franz Marc is filled with peace. The artist depicted two women who are resting on the grass and talking to each other.

You can make many assumptions about who these women are. Perhaps these are two girlfriends who went for a walk and decided to relax. Or maybe it’s a mother and daughter who are discussing some family matters or secrets.

The action of the picture takes place on the side of a mountain, somewhere in the background there should be a mountainous area, but the artist left this behind the scenes in order to fill the canvas with tranquility. It is noticeable that the artist did not pay much attention to details on purpose. The faces of the women cannot be made out: one, shielding herself from the sun, covered herself with her hand, the other, while talking about something, turned in profile to the audience. The effect of sweeping is inherent in the rest of the elements of the picture: there is no clarity in the lines, there is only smoothness.

The blue jacket of one of the women stands out as a bright spot on the green grass. But the green grass became the main color center of the canvas. The delicate yellow color of a woman’s hat and flowers set off the green grass even more favorably. This artful combination of warm hues gives the painting an exceptional calmness.
